Cain, Raymond Chandler en Mickey Spillane. Vandaar ook dat sommige filmcritici film noir eerder als een subgenre van de misdaadroman beschouwen.

Over de noir-status van Alfred Hitchcocks thrillers uit die periode zijn de meningen verdeeld: Shadow of a Doubt (1943), Notorious (1946), Strangers on a Train (1951) en The Wrong Man (1956). Otto Preminger vestigde zijn reputatie met Laura (1944) en werd een van de hoogst aangeschreven regisseurs van het genre. Zijn andere klassieke noirs zijn Fallen Angel (1945), Whirlpool (1949), Where the Sidewalk Ends (1950) en Angel Face (1952). Billy Wilder maakte enkele jaren na Double Indemnicok en The Lost Weekend enkele noirs die niet zozeer krimi s waren, maar eerder satires op de Hollywoodproducties: Sunset Boulevard (1950) en Ace in the Hole (1951).
